- A clear ceremony-to-reception flow. Can you flip the room or use two separate spaces? Cocktail hour somewhere while the ceremony space resets? Know the transition plan before you sign.
- Weather contingency (if outdoors). What's the rain plan? A tent? An indoor backup? A tent costs $800–$2,500 to rent and is worth every cent in NC's unpredictable spring and summer.
- Catering flexibility. Does the venue require you to use their in-house catering, or can you bring in your own caterer? Required in-house catering can limit your menu options and often costs more per head.

- "We can accommodate up to 300 guests." Cool. You have 40. This is not a micro wedding venue. It's a traditional wedding venue in which you'd be a very small fish.
- No clear point of contact. If it's hard to get a straight answer during the inquiry stage, it will be hard to get a straight answer the week before your wedding. Trust the communication style you see, not the one you hope exists.
- No rain plan for outdoor ceremonies. "We've never had it rain on a wedding day here" is not a rain plan. This is North Carolina. It rains. Every venue with an outdoor ceremony component should have a documented backup.
